That jar of beautifully packaged body butter on your bathroom shelf.
Minimalist label. Glossy box. Marketing promises. Natural. Clean. Ethically sourced?
Now stop yourself and ask;
Who actually did the labour? I’ve joined with women bent over for hours. Harvesting, grinding, boiling, stirring, extracting.
Working with raw plants, seeds, barks, oils and butters using methods passed through generations.
No shiny laboratory. No sleek branding agency. No luxury launch campaign. Just physical labour. Skill, time and team work. And often for just pennies.
Pennies that matter deeply as they feed their children, pay school fees, keeping families alive.
Meanwhile in the west, we debate whether a cream feels premium enough. Whether the packaging is aesthetic. Whether the font looks luxurious.
That contrast should make us feel uncomfortable. This isn’t about guilt. Its about awareness.
Because somewhere along the way, presentation became more valuable than substance.
We pay for the packaging. They pay for the labour. Not equal is it? Do consumers genuinely care where products come from – or only when ethical sourcing becomes part of the marketing story?
Would you still buy without the fancy packaging? And why do we trust chemicals more than Nature? Tell me below
