    READER REFLECTIONS

17th January 2026 – Guided by the Unheard 4 stars by Emily Dacho

The book vividly addresses how the locals see themselves in the eyes of the foreigners, and also how foreigners see themselves in the eyes of the locals. Abigail insists her bag has been stolen, not misplaced, perhaps because she’s in Africa, where it’s possible to lose a suitcase as though it “had pulled a Houdini and vanished into thin air.” Adeya’s mother prefers to give Adeya to a white man because, in doing so, maybe Adeya might get married to a foreigner, thus escaping the cycle of poverty. The depth at which the book reveals Africa and Abigail's quest for change will captivate readers.

Seeing Africa through her eyes will be both heartbreaking and enlightening at the same time. She will show you both sides of the coin. A very powerful read I received an advance copy from hidden gems and will be eye opening read
